The first 24 hours of a calf’s life are critical for antibody absorption. Calf scours (diarrhea) is one of the most common and costly diseases in calves, resulting from lack of sufficient protection from mother’s colostrum. ImmuCell continues to be on the forefront of scours prevention technology, manufacturing and marketing First Defense®, the most popular and convenient scours prevention administered to calves.

First Defense® is a Bovine Coronavirus-Escherichia coli Antibody (Bovine Origin), which aids in the reduction of mortality and morbidity when administered to neonatal calves. First Defense® is the best defense against calf scours. Find out why!

Indications for Use of First Defense®

When administered to neo-natal calves within the first 12 hours of birth, First Defense® aids in the reduction of mortality and morbidity from scours caused by K99+ E. coli and coronavirus.

To Administer

1. Place the large end of the capsule in dosing gun until firmly seated.

2.  Restrain the calf, and after gently prying open its mouth, place the dosing gun containing the capsule into the back of the throat, eject the capsule into the esophageal opening, using caution to avoid delivery to the trachea. Be certain capsule is not lodged against the throat or mouth when attempting to eject the capsule, or capsule may fracture.

3. To assist passage of capsule down the throat and to stimulate a swallowing reflex, stroke the surface of the tongue, or the outside of the throat. Whenever possible, bottle feed or allow the calf to suckle immediately after administering the capsule.
